“It does make me laugh quite a lot. As with most things if you speak out or take an unpopular stance there are always those ready and waiting to throw up, "lolz lose the tinfoil hat everything is fine," followed quickly by the, "shush guyzzz logic not allowed in this thread," when no one making those comments actually used any. It's simple to take a mojority opinion and find yourself supported. You require no evidence in support because the crowd already believes you and who cares about pesky facts anyway? I quote the list because I think it's perfectly relevant. There are tons who would like to conflate the fact that woot employs good, well meaning people to mean the Woot! the subsidiary of Amazon is a good well meaning company. They are not the same thing. Throughout it's history woot has been more than willing to continue selling stolen designs as long as the rights could be quickly and efficiently procured. They've also been increasingly willing to expand the number of designs using other people's IP while lowering their standards for what constitutes fair use. Some designs have already been challenged (The Dark Knight) and removed. What results is that it is impossible to argue with any evidence to support that woot cares about anything but sales. There's no question that the $2 increase and the 6,000 sales cap dramatically improved margins. Even if you count Narf's estimates for what woot paid for an AA blank (and I don't because I think it's a gross overestimation based on woot's volume). Conservatively though the $2 increase and the switch to Anvil increased woot's net gain per t-shirt by around $5. That's ENORMOUS for bulk sales. And that's why seki is back. They never cared that she stole the design. They cared that they were facing litigation because of it. Woot has always taken a print first and collect money and pull shirt later after we have to approach. There are two possible outcomes to the World Nomination that I can forsee (mostly because I can't remember if it happened before or after they were acquired by Amazon). One is, "Look at our big scary Amazon legal team...you can't possibly afford to litigate and we can afford to keep this in the courts for years before you recoup a dime. We'll take down the shirt and you go away, capice?" The second is that there was an actual settlement where money changed hands somewhere along the way. Both will be covered by NDA and we will never know. But infringement there and whatever settlement took place only affects that design. Woot knows it will sell a bunch of music is life shirts and it's going to because money is all that matters. Moral character of their designers has never played a role.”

“To all those voting, please do not support thiefs. ramy has been stealing design ideas from woot artists, slightly modifying them, and printing them elsewhere. Help send a message that we are tired of his unethical behavior by removing or not voting for any of his designs.”

“Related to that thought, but also for my own curiosity I went through and roughly categorized the top sellers and they break down sort of like this. I split the pop culture into geeky math shirts (periodic tables, equations, etc.), IP shirts (creations of other people i.e. Batman, Star Wars, etc.), and Memes (pirates, ninjas, demotivational posters, etc.). We then have the cutesy shirts and several that are difficult to characterize. Many pop culture could fit in cute or geek as well, but I did not double count. Geek: 5
IP: 15
Memes: 9
Cute: 8
Uncharacterized: 6 The cute and the uncharacterized shirts I would classify and being original designs that don't rely on external ideas for sales. The pop culture designs obviously are taking advantage of popular franchizes/objects/ideas. So that puts us at: Original: 14
Not-original: 29 For those curious here are the ones I didn't put in a category and where they might go: Apathy Coalition: could be a meme but the derby was about propaganda posters so I didn't feel that it was fair Fat Unicorn: It could be a cute shirt though I don't find it terribly cute nor do I feel that it is appealing because it is cute Squeeze: Again argument could be made that it's a cute shirt, though it would be tenuous I think. Donut Panic: It's frightened food, and probably should fit in the memes category but it's a derby meme not really global so the average buyer wouldn't be exposed to that so I didn't count it (cute too I guess) Music is Life: I suppose you could make an argument that it geeky because of the ipod, and it definitely fits into the swirly category, but in its defense ramy and seki created that here so for the most part I'd say it stands on its own. Kitchen Warfare: Can't think of any real place to put this. Making bigger designs out of smaller related items is kind of a thing in the shirt world but there's no real precedent for this particular one unless you want to count iron chef or other cooking shows like that. I don't.”

“Please.......I'm from Denver. Rabbits are neither plentiful nor common in the city and any that might be are not all white cotton tails. This is a phenotype of bunny used primarily by ramy and copied by Patrick to pander to that crowd. It is clearly working but it's insulting to everyone to pretend it makes sense outside of that. Don't be so naive.”

“The design and execution are good save for the fact that you had to pander to the bunny crowd rather than use an animal that would actually be in an urban area. Really cheapens the design and detracts from the execution. It's pretty disappointing actually. At this stage you might as well have thrown in a penguin and a turtle for good measure.”

“Wouldn't a better way to broaden your audience be to promote diversity of design in style in the derby and dailies rather than whittling your audience down to a tiny niche by only enforcing rules favorable to lucrative artists in the derby and narrowing your focus in dailies to a few design styles?”

“Though I agree completely that the voting community isn't necessarily representative of the buying community, it has also been noted in the reckoning discussion that the past few weeks 3rd place has been on AA whereas 1st and 2nd were not. It's hard to say what effect that has had on sales, but it's certainly another factor.”
