“C'mon. What isn't gender neutral about a firefighter? And an alien? And don't girls just love Jack Sparrow (who seems rather androgynous, despite his attraction to the girls). These make great "learning to tell time" watches, since they have the minute markings that make it easier to tell where the big hand is pointing.”

“These Pearl Oyster Mushrooms are awesome! My daughter did a science project using them. Mushroom guru Paul Stamets claims that this kind of mushroom (and some other varieties) can remove petroleum (and other contaminants) from soil. Go to google to find a link to his 2008 TED talk, titled "Six ways mushrooms can save the world." He has found uses for fungus in medicine, in biological control of insects, to aid growth of trees and other green plants, as oil-eaters, and more. He has written a book or two on "magic mushrooms" as well, so he is clearly a fun guy! (Pun intended.) I must cast some doubt on his claims, as my daughter's seven-week experiment showed no change in petroleum levels in soil contaminated with diesel fuel, but I want to retest the soil after a year, since these biological processes take time. (Looking behind Stamets' claims, he way overstated the speed and degree of soil improvement in the past studies, but I remain hopeful that we will see some change.) I guess it makes sense that the organisms evolved to break down the chemical bonds in the cellulose and lignin of trees could also break some of the bonds that hold together large petrochemical molecules. I hope research in this area will continue. In the meantime, these 'shrooms are great in an omelette!”
